2013 Scholar of the Year

Alyssa Puia

 
The 2013 Scholar of the Year is Alyssa Puia from Suffield High School. Bowling runs in Alyssa's
family as Ambrose, her great-grandfather, and Vic, her grandfather, owned Simsbury Lanes for 36
years. She has been bowlingwith her sisters for 10 years, holding a 170 average. Alyssa has been
involved with several groups at her school. The Wildcat Advisory Group is a group of upperclassmen
that mentor freshman as they transitionto high school. She was a student representative to the Board
of Education. She would speak to the Board each month regarding student life at the high school and
answer questions about student issues. Outside of school, Alyssa volunteered at the local library for
the past 9 years, helping with the children's roomand the summerreading program. She honed her
Spanish skills as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House of Springfield and has participated in the
Relay for Life for 5 years.
 
She took Honors and Advanced Placement courses throughout high school, earning over 40 credits
towards her college degree. She will be attending The University of Rhode Island to study pharmacy
in the six-year program PharmD Program. She plans to work as a clinical pharmacist in a hospital setting
and interact with patients and doctors. Working with the FDA or in drug research are also possibilities
